This Coming Saturday

Dear Everybody,

Join me this coming Saturday at the 2nd Annual Book Fair of the W.J Niederkorn Library of Port Washington, where among many local authors, I will be presenting the book I have put together with my photographs about the Harbor and Marina of Port.

It will be an hour long talk about the book, stories of some of the photographs and at the same time I will be sharing some details about the online self publishing industry through my own experience with this book.

See a good quality book preview here_ http://issuu.com/fmmorante-marinas/docs/marinasissuu

Hope to see you then.

The Sweet and Sour Taste of Rejection.

Third time rejected this year. :(

Sometimes the best part of rejection is to take the position of "you must be doing something wrong". Not out of low self-esteem, but thinking you doing something wrong and keep trying to find out what it is makes you try to get better.

So... maybe next time.

Random Walks

Dawn and I are getting close to our first year living in Random Lake, however I have to admit to not have the chance to really explored it as I should for several reasons (work, lack of time, nasty weather, work, MARINAS, work in the house, etc). Still, I try to make room here and there to take a walk around it. Here are some of those moments I find while I do so.

Returning to the South

Not the best day to go out but I found few things that may be revisited with better light conditions. Still trying to find the river.

The Magic of Light

Untitled (Testing Lumen Print process)_ ©F. Martín Morante.2014

Finally I got around to do Lumen Prints following some tips given to me by great artist and friend Vicki Reed.

Using paper from a very well expired box of Kodak Polycontrast IIIC paper, I made this first attempt in order to see what would come out of it. This is what we can really call photography even not using a photo camera, as this print was made simply by placing objects (in this case a feather and 3 branches of flowers from our garden) on top of the paper and pressed with glass, being exposed for an hour on the sun light.

Not bad for the first time. Now, below what you see its the same lumen print translated into a positive by treating it like you will with a paper negative. This (the inversion) was done digitally as you cannot do it the regular way (passing light through it) because the Kodak paper has its name stamped all over on the back, which will be printed on the positive. Still, much more to think about after this result.

New Order playing at Milwaukee's SummerFest 2014.

(Sorry for the bad quality photo)

Last night Dawn and I saw for the first time live a band for which we both share a deep passion: NEW ORDER. My best friend Daniel saw them in Uruguay recently and told me was a concert not to miss and he was right. A great concert after 25 years without coming to Milwaukee, full of known old and new songs, with the same energy level from the band and the public response as everytime you hear a song from them.

To our surprise, being a band not used to make encores as part of their concerts, they did indeed, coming back to play 2 more songs from their years as Joy Division: Atmosphere & Love Will Tear Us Apart (one of my favorites); while images of the late Ian Curtis were displayed on a big screen, along with a screen dedication saying "FOREVER JOY DIVISION". That gave goosebumps.

Really happy to have lived it.
