I had heard someone before saying that boats and green windows have become a little of a cliché when it comes to paintings and photographs about Italy.

I do not care. I just finished this painting and yes, I am guilty, but there is not regret on this one :) . I really enjoyed this one a lot since it took me away for a little from "my horizons", it made me take one more step in my practice and it took me back for a little to a great summer memory.

Today I share this "cliché" with you! Cheers!

Escuché una vez a alguien decir que botes y ventanas verdes se han convertido en una especie de "cliché", refiriéndose a pinturas y fotografias sobre Italia.

La verdad que no me importa. Acabo de terminar esta pintura y si, soy culpable, pero no hay arrepentimiento en esta :) . Realmente disfruté mucho pintando este cuadro ya que me saco un poco de "mis horizontes", me hizo dar un paso mas en seguir practicando y me llevó por un rato al recuerdo de un gran verano.

Hoy así comparto este "cliché" contigo! Salud!

I have added a new gallery on my website. This it is composed by my latest body of work titled "The Genovese Rhapsody".

While staying several days in Genova (Italy), it caught my attention from the beginning the corners of the city (specially the Old Downtown) where layers of advertising posters cover one another, creating not only beautiful abstract images but also creating a metaphor on how I perceived the city itself; the result of centuries of cultural layers overlaying on each other, sharing a space not always in harmony but still being part of a whole.

The complete introductory text to this series will be available soon on the website, but for now I invite you to see the WHOLE series of 15 images (which I had finished editing after 2 months of working on it) by clicking HERE!

He adherido una nueva galería en mi sitio web. Esta esta formada de mi mas reciente cuerpo de trabajo titulado "La Rapsodia Genovesa".

Al estar varios días en la ciudad de Genova (Italia), capturaron desde un principio mi atención las esquinas de la ciudad (especialmente en el Viejo Centro) donde capas de afiches se superponen, creando no solamente bellas composiciones abstractas sino que también creando metáforas en cuanto a como percibí la ciudad misma; el resultado de siglos de capas culturales superponiéndose, compartiendo un lugar no siempre en harmonía pero aún formando parte de un todo.

Port Washington will be serving a fresh and tasty dish of good local art. Thanks to the great energy that Jane Suddendorf has put into Gallery 224, the community will benefit from another 2 months display of local art in several disciplines, which will bring some color to these gray days of winter.

I have to say that I am not only excited about being part of this show with so many talented artists, but also with the quality with which Jane ( and everybody helping ) have put this show together in a very professional way.

Sadly I will be in Arizona during the opening day, but please, make an effort to go down there and meet some of the artists, see their work and if you decided to stick around town for dinner, enjoy... you won´t be disappointed.

Port Washington estará sirviendo otro plato fresco y con buen gusto de arte local. Gracias a la gran energía que Jane Suddendorf ha puesto en Gallery 224, la comunidad local se verá beneficiada por 2 meses con otra muestra de arte local en variadas disciplinas, las cuales traerán un poco de color a estos días grises de invierno.

De mi parte, tengo que decir que no solamente estoy contento de formar parte de esta muestra con tantos artistas de buen talento, sino que también con la calidad con la cual Jane (y la gente que ha ayudado) ha armado esta muestra de una manera completamente profesional.

Lamentablemente estaré de viaje en Arizona el día de la apertura, pero por favor, si podes hacer un esfuerzo lárgate hasta allí y conoce a alguno de los artistas, ve sus trabajos y si decidís quedarte a cenar, disfruta... no habrá decepción.

Below you will see the text sent to me by Marie Langford in regards of a gallery opportunity on Port Washington, Wisconsin. The project which sounds interesting, will take place in the old Port's fire house. Please, do not hesitate to contact her (e-mail address below) with any questions about it.

I am in the process of opening an art gallery with studios in Port Washington. I want to offer a pleasant, welcoming place for you to display and sell your art. We will be advertising on the web and in the local area to help bring customers in. My current goal is to be open by mid Feb. 2012. The building is a two level historical building, one block from downtown and two blocks from Lake MIchigan. The building has plenty of light and ambiance and offers free parking.  

The main floor will house the gallery in two rooms.  There will be wall space for rent, a few floor spaces and glass cases for other art.  Art will be hung using professional gallery tracks and track lighting. studios will be in the lower level. We plan to have about 72 spaces, a few glass cases and 6 studios. My goal is to have a comfortable gallery that will appeal to the general public. I plan to have quarterly “Gallery Nights” for the artists to come to the gallery and have a chance to chat with potential customers and tell them about your art.

We are currently looking for artists interested in renting a space or studio. Any artist signing up by Nov. 15th will receive a 20% discount on their 1st month rent. If you are interested in signing up or would  like more info please email Bette at drifted_art@yahoo.com

Pintura Acrílica "Dos Platos" y Yo en el Ozaukee County Art Show este año.

Por un poco mas de un año ( después de mi retorno o partida del Uruguay) he estado aleatoriamente pensando y trabajando tanto interna como externamente en una no tan simple respuesta a una pregunta con tantas puntas como respuestas.

Que es ser "Uruguayo"?; para empezar debería mirar a una cantidad de puntos relacionados con la tan llamada identidad nacional tan difícil de asegurar en estos tiempos de globalización, especialmente cuando personalmente he estado fuera del país por casi una tercera parte de mi vida, lo que crea una especie de "pausa" en la vida de uno, algo que muchas veces es muy difícil de entender por otros como me ha pasado cuando me he encontrado a mi mismo en un país al que me gusta llamar "mío" pero que al mismo tiempo no es mas el que " me gusta recordar" (y la brecha mental crece cada vez mas al pasar del tiempo). Separo si de este plato a familia y amigos, a los cuales en algunos casos el estar lejos ha acercado aún mas.

A no equivocarse, todavía AMO a "mi país" y así como me fui por opción propia, se que también tengo la posibilidad de volver cuando quiera, suerte que no corre o ha corrido otra gente en otros tiempos políticamente hablando o en otros países con situaciones de las que hemos escuchado con anterioridad. A su vez también me gusta mi "otro país", en el cual vivo desde hace un tiempo y que como cualquier pariente tiene cosas que amo y cosas que no y me gustaría cambiar pese a que no puedo lo que me ha llevado a adaptarme (sin aceptar, algo que es totalmente distinto) a algunos de sus defectos.

Pero volviendo al tema de la representación de identidad, múltiples ideas en como exteriorizar algo tan "internamente abstracto" ha estado yendo y viniendo durante todos estos meses, dándome así alguna que otra placentera respuesta. Hace un tiempo, hablando con alguien sobre lo "bueno y lo malo" de Andy Warhol y la "inmortalidad" de las latas de Sopas Campbell, pensé en una idea que quizás suene sin valor, pero que tuvo mucho sentido para mi. Tomar elementos de la "cultura uruguaya" y convertirlos en iconos. Pero como hacer cuando la idea de iconos para unos puede ser muy diferente de la mía? Para dar un ejemplo, Uruguay es un país con el fútbol como una manera religiosa de vivir, la cuál encuentra en mi persona el mas agnóstico personaje a tratar de convencer de modo alguno de afiliación. Como sea... comencé de manera simple ( y de nuevo, todavía sigo procesando) y tomando cosas alrededor mío, especialmente las que tienen que ver con familia o amigos, y las obviamente repetidas (tango, fútbol, etc) y ahí es cuando me cayó la ficha: comida!.

Así es como cuando comencé a pensar al respecto llegué a la idea de como algunos colores y formas traen una reacción en cadena de memorias en una persona, especialmente cuando el foco de atención es la tan llamada "identidad nacional". Hasta ahora he pintado 3 conceptos relacionados con Uruguay ( "Dos Platos", "El Arco Iris Según Kessman" y "El Trole No Pasa Mas Por El Túnel") al mismo tiempo que sigo procesando otros mas y como le haré para representar esas cosas en una manera que tenga sentido (aun si es para mi). Pero volviendo a la comida, todavía tengo conmigo 3 paquetes de Polenta Puritas que me quedan desde que vine. Polenta o "comida para pajaritos" como tierna y jocosamente Dawn le gusta llamarla, es una de esas cosas que me llega como algo de los que usaría para describir a otros de manera simple, general y popular lo que Uruguay es.

Porque simple como parece, un plato de Polenta (especialmente Puritas) es mi vieja haciendo el almuerzo para mi y mis hermanas antes de ir a clase. Es la mesa los Domingos rodeado de primas antes de que cada uno empezará a hacer sus propios Domingos. Es un invierno frío cuando el sol asoma de manera tímida a través de la ventana, dejándote ver las espirales de humo saliendo del plato y dándote las mas confortables sensaciones; es el aroma de un plato de comida hecho en casa junto con el primer vaso de vino tinto dado por tu viejo cuando tenías 10 años. Es una manera ecónomica ( o no) de poner un plato de comida en la mesa durante tiempos jodidos. Y si, la lista puede seguir creciendo y por eso es que tenía que encontrar una manera de representar ( aun si era para mi) para que cuando al ser vista, aun en la manera mas abstracta, me recordaría a Uruguay.

Hoy almorcé con mi suegra y comí un plato de "polenta a la uruguaya", algo que se ha convertido en una especie de tradición personal cuando cae la primera nieve, señal del invierno que llego, y así, de la manera simple con la cuál el plato se sienta en la mesa, con sus olores, colores y formas me llevo a Uruguay por al menos media hora, a mi infancia y aun a un país que ya no existe mas pero que todavía llevo conmigo. Aún si es en la forma de una pintura.

For almost a year ( after I came back from Uruguay) I have been randomly thinking and working internally and externally on a not so simple answer to a question with many branches as possible answers.

What its to be "Uruguayan"?; to start I should look at the multiple issues regarding the so-called national identity so hard to assure to have, specially on these globalized times, and specially when the fact of have been out of the country for almost a third of my life, creates a "pause" in someone's life sometimes hard to understand for others as I had on the past when I find myself on a country I like to call "mine" but that at the same time is not anymore the one I like to recall ( and the mental gap keeps growing as time goes by).

Do not get me wrong, I still LOVE "my country" and as I left by choice, I can go back too by choice, a luck that other people do not have. I also like "my other country", the one I live on and the one that like any relative, has things I love and things I would like to change but I can't and I adapt myself ( not accept which is different) to it.

But going back to the issue of "identity", working on multiple things about how to externalize something so "internally abstract" have been on and off during these months giving me some pleasant outcomes. A while ago, having a conversation about the "good and bad" about Andy Warhol and the "immortalization" of the Campbell Soup, I thought on a idea that seemed silly but that it made a lot of sense for me. To take elements from "uruguayan culture" and convert them into an icon. But how to do that when someone's ideas of "iconic" can be very different from mine?. To give you an example, Uruguay, a country BIG on soccer as a religious way of life, finds in myself the most agnostic possible person to try to convince of affiliating. Anyway..., I started simple (and again, I am still working on it), so I took things around me, specially the ones I have with me that are not the ones related to my most closest circles ( family and friends) and the obviously repeated ( tango, soccer, etc) and that its when it did hit me... pum!!! food its one.

So when I started to think about it I came up with the idea about how certain colors and shapes bring a chain reaction of memories in a person, specially when the focus is the so called "national identity". So far I had painted 3 concepts of uruguayan related concepts, while I am still processing not only others, but also how am I going to represent them in a way that makes some sense, even if it is just to me. Going back to the food, I still have with me 3 packages left of Polenta Puritas (national brand) from the last time I was down there (Uruguay) and today I re confirmed the concept. Polenta o bird food as my wife Dawn likes to call it, is one of those things that makes its way to me as one of the things part of that general, popular and simplistic way I would describe before the answer of what its Uruguay?

As simple it seems, polenta to me, is my Mom making lunch for me and my sisters before going to school. It is a family table with relatives when Sundays were pack with cousins before everyone started to make their Sundays. It is a cold winter with the clear sun comes shy through a window and letting you see spirals of smoke coming out of the plate, with the most comforting feelings, its the smell of home made food and the first glass of wine served by your father when you were 10 years old. It is a cheap way ( or not) to put a plate of food on the table during the bad times. And yes, the list can keep growing and that its why I had to find a way to represent that (even if it was for myself) so when I look at it, even in its most abstract shape, would remind me of Uruguay (pictures below).

Today, I had lunch with my mother in law and I had a plate of "uruguayan style polenta", something that have become some type of personal tradition when the first snow comes, sign of a winter coming, and the simple fact of that plate on the table with the smells, looks and shapes as I will always picture them, took me for half hour to Montevideo, to my childhood, to a country is not anymore there but I still carry with me. Even if it is in the shape of a painting.

Today the first snow of the year started to hit the ground around here. The summer was really short, but despite of going really fast, it was good. Simple and good with a lot of good memories (finally).

Tomorrow from 8 AM to Noon, Smith Brothers Coffee House will be hosting their first Arts and Crafts Fair of the season. It will be an interesting morning to stop by and while enjoying a cup of coffee, shop or look at different works by local artisans.

I will be there too, selling some of my 8 x 10 prints in a wide variety of subjects for every taste at VERY accessible prices. Below a sample of some of them.

3 months almost have passed since I painted something personal. The trip, work , more work and lack of inspiration, motivation or time made my fingers itch really bad until last Friday night when I started and later on the weekend finished the painting seen above. It did feel good. It really did.

3 meses han pasado ya desde la última vez que pinte algo mío. El viaje, trabajo, mas trabajo y la falta de inspiración, motivación y tiempo hicieron que me picaran los dedos realmente mal hasta el Viernes pasado, cuando empece para luego sobre el fin de semana terminar la pintura que se ve en este post. Hizo bien. Bastante bien.
