She.

"She"_(Playa Malvin, 2010)

Quick chain of thoughts_ Yesterday I listened REM's song "She Just Wants to Be" and made me think of one of my top favorite pictures from the ones I have ever taken. And then the question, who is she? why to like this picture above others, besides the color palette, composition, etc, etc? And the answer is because somehow she is she. "She" was a women I came across while walking on Montevideo's beach named Malvin (my favorite beach in the city, adoration of a place built of memories over memories), but time and memories have converted her in many women to which I have come across or have been part of my life.

"She" is my Mom watching us growing without been able to stop time, but giving always the best of her for us because that's what Moms do, not matter what; she is the Grandma and aunt I have which many times were my mother too; she is the other Grandma I do not have anymore, and from who I only remember the sweetness of her face expression and that's a lot; she is my first grade teacher with a smile always on the pocket of her shirt; she is the mom of a school friend who one day stopped coming to the school at the sound of the bell and my friend stopped having a mom; she is my sister pushing hard everyday for a better tomorrow and she is my other sister happy of having a present; she is the girl on the other classroom and the girl on my classroom; she is the one I loved, who left too soon and she is the one that took her away from us; she is the one I gave once a ring when looking back and inside I was not ready for; she is the one that told me how much she loved me just to find silence from the other side of the bed; she is the one I thought I loved; lying to her and also lying to myself; she is the one I did really try to love but could not; she is too the neighbor for who I will do the groceries during the summer months when I was a kid; and the one asking me if I was ok after fighting with two robbers on the street; she is the one I did not do anything for when I saw her from a moving bus getting hit by a guy on the side of the street, and she is the one I almost got myself killed when I tried to defend her on a midnight I prefer to forget; she is my first real kiss when I was thirteen; she is the one that made me laugh really hard and I do not remember her name, she is the one that I bored to death but still remembers mine; she is my cousins and the acceptance that time took us on different paths; she is the one I broke her heart, she is the one that almost turned mine into stone; she is the one that told me I was not good enough and made me want to be better; she is my favorite singer and she is the french actress I always fantasized to at least have a coffee with; she is the one that gave me a real hug when I needed the most; she is the four psychologists I met as friends and who could not leave the notebook at home not matter how hard they tried, she is the one that did not went to school for it and have it more clear than them; she is the girl at the coffee shop that used to draw figures on my cappuccino's foam; she is the one that accused me of lying when she did not want to hear the truth; she is my mother in law, who sometimes drives me crazy but I still love and own a lot; she is that really good looking girl on the parisian subway, like in a movie clichè, sadly looking at everything and looking at nothing; she is the one that goes talking about finding herself, when she never bothered to search; she is the girl that pops on your life after years of silence like nothing ever happened and asking for too much; she is the one I damned once but wish I would have done things different with her; and she is the one you just met and feel like know her from always; she is the one that becomes a real friend and makes you really forget she is a woman; she is the one who cannot look beyond her nose and she is the one who does not want to look at her own; she is the mother of a friend that in the hard times has words that double as a mother and as a friend; and she is the one selling flowers on a Montevideo cemetery, who according to her I was one of her best customers but would love to not see me anymore because to see me was to see sadness; she is the one that could not take a no; she is the one that owns me an apology, she is the one I own one; she is the one I still talk with after thirty years like only some good friends get to do; she is the one that once took care of me, she is the one I took care of; she is the one I love and the one I choose to live my life with, she is my lover and she is my friend.

Someone will say :

All that on one picture? yes, and more.

Sadly I did not make the cut this time (see previous post), but at least I tried. That's the best way to look at it. I'll try again in... 3 years!

Is it Christmas yet?

The above instant reply is what I received on July 12th, after submitting my formal entry to the Triennial Wisconsin Photography 2012 organized by the Racine Art Museum of Wisconsin, with my work "Internal Exteriors"-10 pieces out of the 13 that compose the portfolio- CLICK HERE TO SEE IT. We are one day away from the official notification and I am really feeling like I used to as a kid before Christmas. So we'll see tomorrow if I was a good kid.

We found the river (and many other rivers) as well as the river found us. Just back from a short but impressive road trip through an area of Wisconsin (and Iowa) that really left a mark. I am sharing some pics below, hoping that I will finish processing soon all the film and prints as well as some short text I wrote about my impressions of the "Great River" and some distant places still related to it.

The one above shows a section of the Milwaukee river at the town of Newburg. According to a person I spoke that morning, the boat visible on the pic had sank some 20 years ago, only to be "returned" by the river in what it has been (and still is) one of the worst droughts on Wisconsin. This picture was taken on July 1st, however the water you see on it has reduced its volume to a third for what I saw last Tuesday. The boat did "disappear" too.  I just hope we get some rain soon (at least 3 days of it).

Meanwhile, as I keep processing the images from the last couple of weeks, I prepare myself for another river. Tomorrow early morning Dawn and I will be heading west again, in a short road trip through the state of Wisconsin. This time, will be heading all the way to see the corner where the Wisconsin river meets the Mississippi river.

Looking forward to this trip, to spend some time together, and also to explore a little more about the state on my first trip to the west of it. I have marked as usual couple of highlights I want to really see (Prairie du Chien, Wyalusing Park and the Kickapoo Indian Caverns), but for the most part will be open to whatever we find. Also I decided to leave behind the digital equipment, mostly because I am taking the "box" with me and a Nikon with color film which I have not used on a very long time.

We will be back soon. See you then.

Crystal Clear

Long story made short. Recently I was informed of the passing of someone I knew. Someone I have not seen in many, many years. Still, I have a good memory of who was a friendly and nice old neighbor and going back to those times, mortality e immortality, time and life passing triggered a lot of thoughts, feelings and questions, which it ended outputting themselves again in the three following pictures being added to my series "Preserved".

Birthday party some many years ago. My Grandpa (from my father's side), el Abuelo. The memory of the man, his stamp and his persona.  I do not recall having a picture of my dad, my grandpa and I on the same frame, however, in these picture we have managed to be the three somehow together at the same moment. Triangle composition if there is one. Me and my Grandpa making one side, and my Dad behind the camera being the invisible vertex. My dad now reaching the age my Grandpa had around that time, and me reaching the age my dad had when he took the picture. Are repetition and circle the same?. My Dad showing some of the personality keys I remember from his father and me showing every year how I look more like my own old man and not only physically. Interesting. My Dad taking pictures to preserve memories and me taking pictures to remember. The same and not the same. Ambiguity. Today there won't be a "little Martin" in sight to hold my picture on the future. No regrets. My idea of immortality someday will be preserved on a jar. That is enough. The image of my Grandpa engraved on me each time I wear a hat similar to the one he used to wear, and my Dad close to me each time I press the shutter. Past and present. Future is another question with not immediate answer.

A place called Olmos close to the capital. A Saturday or a Sunday. Do not remember date but still remember that was a family day. It's all it matters. Grandma went along as many times she did. I own (speaking for myself) a lot to my "Abuela" from our childhood. I say my childhood because is from where I remember her the most. Then, distance. Not only physical but emotional.  It took me some years to understand what the loss of someone can mean on your life to understand her and maybe her way of distance herself. Still I try to understand, her and myself. On the meanwhile I remember, I remember my Abuela from my childhood.

Through the years I have come across several pictures like the one seen here. A kid offers "mate" (a typical uruguayan infusion) to the monument of the "Charrúas" in the Prado Park in Montevideo. From a kid point of view, the picture is loaded of a sympathetic attitude. From an adult standpoint it shows how much I did not know and how much I do know now. How much is meant to stay the same and how much can change through the years. Innocence lost.

Harvesting

Finally tonight I will be able to head into the darkroom to do some printing of what I have been "harvesting" along the Milwaukee River. I have been looking at the negatives all these past days and I have to say that I am really anxious to see what comes out of the trays.

Also tomorrow I have off because of the holiday, so I will be hitting really early a private part of the river to which I was given permission to photograph. Will see what I find there...

Hoping to share some of it soon. :)

Hungry Eyes

(click on the image to enlarge)

"Untitled" (Newburg, WI)
© Flavio Martín Morante_2012

I started reading last week a book on Walker Evans, titled the "The Hungry Eye" so the picture above which I took yesterday early morning, took me for a moment to his work. It is a nice Americana Postcard I took on the small Wisconsin town of Newburg, 10 minutes away from where I live. It is a really nice picture for several reasons I think, despite the beautiful 6 in the morning light, the picture is almost completely atemporal (except for the light bulb on the front door) and the fact that it is full of lines as I do like them, the picture it is somehow of a visually conceptual game. I present to you a picture of a window displaying artwork. I open a window to a window that shows more windows to something else. Then, you open your own door into it and walk in, always welcome.

PS_ I already "chased" some of Evans footsteps through the state of Alabama on what ended up being my "self-published" book last year which I named "Greetings from Alabama", which you can see by doing click HERE if you are interested.
