"Untitled #3" and "Untitled #2" from the series "Preserved"

Long gone are those days when the flavors being "canned" at the end of summer told us of another year gone and another year to come. Fruits being preserved to be enjoyed on the future while being processed  on the present, became without knowing a simple metaphor for the mere existence of oneself. 

"Preserved", my latest "serious" body of work in a "more than desired long while" takes up (or try to) on the simple and complicated concept of past of time and the memories harvested of it. The fragility. The tangible and intangible. What be save and what we discard. What stays with us by will or not and what fades without importance. 

By letting myself being grab by the abstract smells, flavors and textures of another time, places and memories saved (consciously and unconsciously) speak to me about the ephemerality of life and how the idea of future becomes quickly present and more quickly past.

Despite that I am still working on the text for the pictures, I am also more interested in what the pictures itself represent and the reason why I share them here today, is because I am starting to "wrap it up" in preparation to submit them to the Wisconsin Artist Biennal 2011.

The two images seen above as the whole series is something I want to dedicate completely to my parents. To them, "SALUD!!!!"

Muy atrás han quedado aquellos días donde los sabores "enlatados" al final del verano nos hablaban de un año ido y otro por venir. Frutas siendo preservadas para ser disfrutadas en un futuro mientras eran procesadas en el presente se han convertido sin saberlo en simple metáfora sobre la mera existencia de uno mismo. 

"Preserved"/ "En Conserva", mi más reciente cuerpo de trabajo en un "tiempo mas largo de lo deseado" explora (o trata de hacerlo), el simple y complicado concepto de paso del tiempo y de las memorias cosechadas con el mismo. Lo frágil. Lo tangible e intangible. Lo que guardamos, lo que desechamos. Lo que queda, por voluntad propia o no y lo que se desvanece sin importancia.

Al dejarme abrazar por los abstractos olores, sabores y texturas de otros tiempo, lugares y memorias guardadas (consciente e inconscientemente), estos me hablan de lo efímero de nuestra vida y de como la idea de futuro se convierte rápidamente en presente para convertirse más rápidamente aún en pasado.

A pesar de estar todavía trabajando en el texto de introducción a la serie, estoy mas interesado en lo que las fotos representan y la razón por las que las comparto hoy aquí es porque he empezado a pulir los últimos detalles en preparación para entrar en la Bienal de Arte de Wisconsin 2011.

Estas dos imágenes que se ven mas arriba, así como toda la serie esta dedicada completamente a mis padres. A ellos SALUD!!!

* Las imágenes dentro de los frascos son originales en blanco y negro tomadas por mi padre y mi madre respectivamente entre 1976-77.

Long Walk./ Camino Largo.

This is one of my last pieces, which I did really enjoyed "working" on. I cannot put words on how much I am liking to paint. I just will keep doing it as much as I can.

Esta es una de mis últimas piezas, la cuál realmente disfrute "trabajar". No puedo poner palabras sobre cuánto me esta gustando cada vez mas pintar. Solo se que seguiré haciéndolo lo mas que pueda.

“Prairie Postcard”

It´s windy in the morning, the end of November. Winter is around the corner and the landscape is slowly becoming a grey postcard covered with the ashes of time while a map over the table shows distant dots that become more than names once you hit the road. 

In a segment of long road, where the eyes seem to not find end on the horizon, I see the remains of what once was someone else´s dream. At the side of the road, in complete loneliness, a house which has seen better times stands in solemn acceptance of its destiny. A large cemetery of memories without a family name in sight. I walk around it with respectful slow motion watching how an old curtain shyly moves with the breeze. Tricks of the imagination play in my head, and a stage of another time is taken by actors doing daily dialogues for a public of one. The show tastes of a nostalgic and sad beauty, which I enjoy with morbid innocence. Through a side door I see how an abandoned piano listens with mute jeaulousy as the first drops of a cold rain start to play a concert on the roof. After few minutes I take a last look at it, while the music in my head tells me it is time to go.

Una mañana ventosa, al final de Noviembre. El invierno se encuentra a la vuelta de la esquina y el paisaje lentamente se convierte en una gris postal cubierta por las cenizas del tiempo mientras un mapa sobre la mesa muestra puntos distantes que se convierten en mucho mas que nombres una vez que pisas la ruta.

En un segmento de una larga ruta, donde los ojos parecen no encontrar final en el horizonte, veo los restos de lo que una vez fueran sueños ajenos. Al costado del camino, in completa soledad, una casa que ha visto mejores épocas, se sostiene con solemne resignación de su destino. Un gran cementerio de memorias sin un apellido a la vista. Camino alrededor respetuosamente con la velocidad de una cámara lenta, observando como una vieja cortina se mueve timidamente con la brisa. Trucos de la imaginación juegan en mi mente, y así un escenario de otros tiempos es ocupado por actores realizando sus diarios dialogos para un público de uno. El espectáculo tiene sabor a nostalgia y triste belleza, la cuál disfruto con inocente morbo. A través de una puerta lateral, veo como un piano abandonado escucha con muda celosia como las primeras gotas de una fría lluvia comienzan a tocar un concierto en el techo. Después de unos minutos, doy una última mirada, mientras la música en mi cabeza me dice que es hora de ir.

If it happens for you to be around Cedarburg before March, stop by the Cedarburg Cultural Center, where among the great exhibits shown there, there is the space "Main Street Gallery" where you can see great work by local artists. The show, titled "Where the Heart is", acts as a showcase of different mediums and subjects by the members of the Cedarburg Artist Guild. I am really happy to have a painting titled "La Barca" at the show which you can see here too.

Si te encuentras alrededor de Cedarburg antes de Marzo, visita el Centro Cultural de Cedarburg, donde entre las grandes muestras que tienen lugar ahí, se encuentra el espacio "Main Street Gallery", donde podrás ver buenas obras hechas por artistas locales. La muestra, titulada "Donde se encuentra el Corazón", actúa como persiana de diferentes medios y sujetos representados por miembros de la agrupacion de artistas de Cedarburg. Estoy muy contento de participar de esa muestra con mi pintura titulada "La Barca", la cuál se puede ver aquí también.
