"Untitled #3" and "Untitled #2" from the series "Preserved"

Long gone are those days when the flavors being "canned" at the end of summer told us of another year gone and another year to come. Fruits being preserved to be enjoyed on the future while being processed  on the present, became without knowing a simple metaphor for the mere existence of oneself. 

"Preserved", my latest "serious" body of work in a "more than desired long while" takes up (or try to) on the simple and complicated concept of past of time and the memories harvested of it. The fragility. The tangible and intangible. What be save and what we discard. What stays with us by will or not and what fades without importance. 

By letting myself being grab by the abstract smells, flavors and textures of another time, places and memories saved (consciously and unconsciously) speak to me about the ephemerality of life and how the idea of future becomes quickly present and more quickly past.

Despite that I am still working on the text for the pictures, I am also more interested in what the pictures itself represent and the reason why I share them here today, is because I am starting to "wrap it up" in preparation to submit them to the Wisconsin Artist Biennal 2011.

The two images seen above as the whole series is something I want to dedicate completely to my parents. To them, "SALUD!!!!"

Muy atrás han quedado aquellos días donde los sabores "enlatados" al final del verano nos hablaban de un año ido y otro por venir. Frutas siendo preservadas para ser disfrutadas en un futuro mientras eran procesadas en el presente se han convertido sin saberlo en simple metáfora sobre la mera existencia de uno mismo. 

"Preserved"/ "En Conserva", mi más reciente cuerpo de trabajo en un "tiempo mas largo de lo deseado" explora (o trata de hacerlo), el simple y complicado concepto de paso del tiempo y de las memorias cosechadas con el mismo. Lo frágil. Lo tangible e intangible. Lo que guardamos, lo que desechamos. Lo que queda, por voluntad propia o no y lo que se desvanece sin importancia.

Al dejarme abrazar por los abstractos olores, sabores y texturas de otros tiempo, lugares y memorias guardadas (consciente e inconscientemente), estos me hablan de lo efímero de nuestra vida y de como la idea de futuro se convierte rápidamente en presente para convertirse más rápidamente aún en pasado.

A pesar de estar todavía trabajando en el texto de introducción a la serie, estoy mas interesado en lo que las fotos representan y la razón por las que las comparto hoy aquí es porque he empezado a pulir los últimos detalles en preparación para entrar en la Bienal de Arte de Wisconsin 2011.

Estas dos imágenes que se ven mas arriba, así como toda la serie esta dedicada completamente a mis padres. A ellos SALUD!!!

* Las imágenes dentro de los frascos son originales en blanco y negro tomadas por mi padre y mi madre respectivamente entre 1976-77.
